How to Talk with God - Prayer

Prayer is essential. It is life-giving and essential to making disciples with Jesus.

Praise God
Thank God
Confess you sin and ask for forgiveness
Tell God your prayer requests
Listen to God

Spend some time every day praying with God. Prayer is the way in which we communicate with God, and he wants to get to know us better.

  • Set a specific time during the day and place to talk with God. Some of the greatest saints in the Old Testament had regular appointments with God. David prayed morning, noon, and night.
  • This will be a reminder to you of your need to pray.

Prayer is a never-ending conversation with God.

  • Abraham walked with Him daily.
  • David gratefully sang to Him, fearfully whispered to Him, and angrily cried out to Him.
  • Jesus practiced it with awe for the Heavenly Father and modeled it with fewer words than more.
  • Paul wrote, “Pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17).

Think about yielding yourself to God

  • Long prayers are not necessarily better prayers.
  • Offer yourself to God and let Him know that you want to know Him better.
  • Pray with reverence and sincerity.
  • Pray in your everyday language.
  • Talk with God as though you were with a friend.

Incorporate Scripture into your prayer time.

  • “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O Lord, my strength and my redeemer.” Psalm 19:14
  • “Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.” Jeremiah 29:12
  • “Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” Mark 11:24
  • “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” Philippians 4:6
